Soap Nut Berries are an eco-friendly, biodegradable, zero waste, natural option for laundry detergent! A gentle option for those wishing to get away from harsh chemicals found in regular detergents.
How it works! Soap nuts are actually berries; they are a cousin of the Goji Berry. When dried, they form a hard shell. The shells contain Saponin, a natural surfactant and soaping agent.
When soap nut shells absorb warm water they release the saponins which circulate as a natural surfactant in the wash water, freeing dirt, grime, and oils from clothing. Unlike chemical laundry soap, there are little to no bubbles, bubbles are not needed for cleaning power.
Chemical free, using soap nuts will give you peace of mind there is no chemical residue left in your laundry to get on your skin. Soap nuts are safe for all skin types, even the tiniest of babies.
How to Use! Depending on the size of the shells, seven to ten shells (but possibly more for smaller pieces) will be enough for an average size load. Place the soap nuts in the cotton muslin bag provided and tie securely shut. Toss in the laundry tub. That's it! There will be little to no bubbles during the wash cycle. This does not detract from their ability to clean.
Soap nuts can be re-used several times before they start to disintegrate. It is time to compost the shells when they start to look mushy and grey; usually after 4-5 washes. Hang the cotton muslin bag and berry nuts up to dry between washes.
Considered a natural detergent, soap nuts have become a popular environmentally friendly alternative to chemical detergent.
